Mother's Day 2011

This beauty is what my oldest son, Charlie, brought to me for Mother's Day...was a quiet, enjoyable day with both the boys and sweet hubby! Touching service at church with youngest, Mike beside me on the pew, then lunch at home with all of us...ahhh, I enjoy just being home without the hustle and noise of a restaurant...I'll post long overdue family pictures...when I can locate them on the computer! Like I said before, I'm still learning.

2011 Florida Jurisdictional Convention

[I definitely have gotten behind -- this was a draft back in May, regarding our convention...]

Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, Florida Jurisdiction...Carl and I were two of 350 people who attended our biennial convention in beautiful St. Augustine May 13-15. We have been Woodmen members for nearly 20 years and have enjoyed the benefits of a fantastic company offering life insurance, financial planning products, and so much more...see http://www.woodmen.org/. But the fraternal portion of this 120 year old company is what we enjoy being part of...great folks, the many community projects and flags...we love presenting flags to non-profit organizations...Lake Ella...that's our flag on the island; Senior Center...that's our flag; Tom Brown Park ball fields...those are from us; Tallahassee Gymnastics Center...that's from us too; Crawfordville, Ft. Braden, Midway...those are our flags; Leon County Elementary Schools...all those classroom flags came from us...we're the #1 provider of American flags other than the U.S. Government! And all across the country, to honor the sacrifice of the heroes in our communities and in our military, we have presented a 30' flag pole and flag to various organizations for "In Honor and Remembrance Day" each 9-11. We're a patriotic company...we love our nation, we love our flag, we love our communities and we love helping others.

Now after that plug, here's just a couple of pictures to share of our weekend...and to share one other bit of news, at the end of the 2011 convention, Carl was re-elected as the Chairman of the Fraternal Service Committee and I was elected Vice President for 2011-2013.

Can't find our other pictures right now...but may have to do a "post" post including more pics...was a great weekend with friends old and new...

Mother's Day

Olene Pinkerton Baker -- 1921 - 1996
In preparing the bulletin for this Sunday - Mother's Day - I decided to post a poem I wrote in honor of Mother's Day 1997. Attached are also pictures of my beautiful mom, who we lost in 1996. That time is still as fresh as if it were yesterday, but her precious memory and words filled with wisdom are ever with me and our family. Every day I wish I could call her and talk again like we use to, but that is not to be. But oh, I do still talk to her and still feel her presence.

Happy Mother's Day to my family members and friends who are mothers, to those older sweet ladies in my life who are like surrogate mothers to me, and those who are looking forward to being mothers for the first time very soon....I love you all.

Mother’s Memories
A loving smile, a gentle touch,
these are the first remembrance of mother.
Tales of “when I was a child,” with
drawing pictures in the dirt with sticks,
imagination, tales of adventures,
paper dolls, stick horses, coloring books,
rainy day cookie baking, scratching backs,
bedtime stories, lullaby, covers tucked,
a kiss goodnight --
these were mother.

With my own children now,
I try to recreate those times,
to give a sense of love,
family, and memories to cherish.
Traditions rich with laughter,
and timelessness, to carry on
through years without end.

Mothers have the ability to
direct the course of the future
of those of us who choose to heed,
with their wise and patient rule,
a listening ear, and hearts that hold on tight.
The prayers continue for the children
who have left the nest to go their own way,
the cord has been cut, but the gentle hold, never!

Treasures are made from the memories
of those who have gone on before us,
And those lives are made richer
who were once touched,
by the hand and heart of a loving mother. ©

Days are rollin' by...

Whew! I knew it would be challenging for me to keep up with a blog page, but I didn't know it would take so long between posts. Sorry! This time of year is jam packed with events and activities going on, but right now is especially trying! And being the "year" of the "every other year" with Woodmen of the World, as the state jurisdictional secretary, I'm sweating bullets to be able to get everything done in time for our convention which starts next Friday, May 13. We'll go to beautiful St. Augustine next Thursday morning and return Sunday evening. Will have to share some things on our return, but for now, just say a quick prayer for me to get everything done that needs to be done and to then be able to enjoy the ride! Here's a quick glimpse of our beautiful facilities at The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village...

Have a blessed weekend!
